What is the difference between alegre and feliz? Is there a certain way you use them?

"Alegre" is etymologically related to "alacrity" in English (both from Latin "alacer", cheerful).

"Feliz" is obviously related to "felicity" in English (from Latin "felix", happy). Foetus and feminine also share the same root, but that's another story.

Good one, I was starting to doubt if that was an accurate translation. - Dakie, Apr 9, 2011

Maybe they can be used interchangeably but "alegre" is more like "in a good mood". - Dakie, Apr 9, 2011
