Question about Además

In the sentence from the word of the day Además de hacerlos, los diseña. - He makes them as well as designs them. Why isn't it El hace les además diseña. Don't understand the sentence at all

The original sentence uses the infinitive, which translates to the gerund in English:
As well as making them, he designs them.
You could also say:
Los hace y además los diseña.
He makes them and designs them as well.
