Ecuadorian tradition (marriage proposal).

Hello,

I just wanted to ask a quick question.

In Ecuador, is it tradition to ask for the Fathers blessing before making a marriage proposal to his daughter?

I am planning on proposing to my girlfriend this year and just wanted to know whether it would be expected of me.

Thank you

Matt

I can't guess what other cultures do, and it would be pointless to speculate, but for it is worth, I'd say that you should politely request her parents' permission, and be flexible about it.

I do live in Ecuador, but I'm already married and I don't know anyone about to get married--most of the people I know are already married. If the opportunity arises, I'll ask, but it is sort of an odd question for me to ask without people getting the wrong idea. . .one of my neighbors told me I need to have a mistress to be a real Ecuadorian male, and no doubt my other neighbors with marriageable daughters would find it strange. big surprise

That said, Ecuador seems more family oriented than the US, so I would guess that it is the customary thing to do.

Thank you for the reply. I understand what you mean about it being an odd question. I think I will ask anyway. Thanks again. - macca124, Apr 9, 2011
