I guess it's a cultural thing. When we tell a recipe we just say "un pellizco de sal", or "una cucharadita de azucar", o "una pizca de aquello". Here in the US, if you don't give the exact amount of every ingredient, people are lost and don't know how to do it. There are exceptions, of course, but it's usually this way.

.

Wow Now how would you measure a quarter of a teaspoon?

.

Here you are!

I have one recipe that calls for 1/8 of a teaspoon of a strong spice. I use little tiny measuring spoons. - KevinB, Apr 8, 2011

La cuarta parte de una cucharadita.

Tres cuartas partes de una cucharadita.

By the way, like Heidi said, how can you tell the difference between them? Such a small different might not even be relevant with cocaine or gold powder. Surely adding 1/2 instead of 3/4 of a teaspoon is not going to ruin your cake.

A teaspoon of gold weighs a little more than 3 Troy ounces, which means a quarter teaspoon is worth a little over $1000. - lorenzo9, Apr 8, 2011
And I guess a quarter teaspoon of cocaine is worth a little more than $1000. - LuisCache, Apr 8, 2011
Probably less than $100 - lorenzo9, Apr 8, 2011

It never occurred to me that in the US we're measuring these small amounts but other in countries it's not done.

Why not just use a "pizca"? I guess a pinch of salt...pinch of pepper...anybody should be able to use that.

We have some of those, but I only measure when baking.

Agreed, i only measure when baking... Cooking I just throw stuff together and taste while it is on the stove. But cakes and such are sooooo fickle that I do not chance it. - kerflop, Apr 8, 2011
Baking is like doing chemistry. Twice as much of something might not make a difference in the taste but it could change the texture. - Leatha, Apr 8, 2011
