Subjunctive question regarding whether it is used correctly.

Se escondió como si se sientiese incómodo - he hid himself as if he felt awkward/ embarrassed.
**here you use subj. because the guy felt uncomfortable, but you don't know if it was uncomfort that he felt, it could have been something else like fear... so you use subj. no?

The phrase "se siente incómodo" would inform the other person about how he/she feels, which is not what we are trying to express here. Think of the sentence "He hid himself as if he felt awkward". You are not saying "he felt awkward" (which is subjunctive in English), and you are not saying "he feels awkward", so there is no indication.
"Como si..." is generally followed by subjunctive, because it presents a completely hypothetical situation, not something that you'd independently indicate without the rest of the sentence.
