I think reading books you have read in english (or just books that are translated from english because the sentence structure is easier for an english speaker at times than books originally written in spanish) helps so much, and it's so much more interesting too than studying text books! It's how kids learn their first language after all.
The first book I read took ages and was scribbled all over with translations by the time I was finished, but it soon gets easier.
The first book I read was Gossip Girl in spanish as I had seen the series so I had an idea of the characters already which helped a lot. (Just make sure the storyline is interesting enough to motivate you to keep going)
On Amazon.co.uk there are a lot of books like My sister's keeper (Por la vida de mi hermana), twilight, bridget Jones, etc available in spanish at reasonable prices.

Well, you could go and live in Mexico or South America but if you do not like any of these Spanish Speaking countries... you might need to ask yourself why do I want to learn Spanish?
