OK so the context in which the word is used is the folowing:

"Children progress through various landmarks in their understanding of mind and emotion..."

I can't think of the word right now but there is a specific word in spanish that fits perfectly there...anyone could help?

I think the word you are looking for is "hito"

"Hito" is more of a word used in the context of "important place or icon" of a certain place (for example the statue of liberty, the Eiffel Tower, e.t.c.) The landmark I'm looking for varies as it is more of a turning point, rather than a historic monument.

No, it definitely refers to a milestone as well as an important place. - pescador1, Apr 6, 2011

This was a sentence taken directly from an official article, made in Harvard. Here's the link: http://www.erin.utoronto.ca/~w3psygs/05PSY210F/Harris2005.pdf

It's the first sentence in that article, not made up stuff. I'm pretty sure it has to work and it kind of makes sense to me. But I can't find the correct word to translate it correctly.
