Endurecer la piel

Endurecer la piel

It seems there is not spanish counterpart for this figurative expression in english. Although I reckon it might be translated as....TO GET TOUGH ENOUGH. Most people wonder about its meaning in a classic latino song Resistire in the following context...

"Me volvere de hierro para endurecer la piel.."

(I will become iron (or made of iron) just to get tough enough...)

If you find a better and more accurate translation I will appreciate it.

Sounds like "having a thick skin" in English.
