Help with translating a Spanish article
Hi there. I'm in the process of trying to translate an article from El País and I'm having some trouble with a paragraph. I've done the best I can with it, but the structure is confusing me a little so I'm not entirely sure I've translated it correctly. The original paragraph says:
'El borrador de Reglamento de Extranjería pretende evitar que haya niños españoles con progenitores en situación irregular - El texto garantiza a las mujeres irregulares que denuncien que no serán expulsadas a la espera de sentencia judicial o de informe fiscal'
and what I've got at the moment is:
'The Immigration Regulation draft tries to prevent there being Spanish children with parents in difficult situations the text guaranties that women who report being in these situations wont be deported while waiting for a judicial sentence or fiscal report'
Does this seem all right? The second sentence especially confused me with the structure of 'las mujeres irregulares que denuncien que no serán expulsadas'. It seemed to me at first that it should be translated as 'women who report that they won't be deported', but that didn't really make sense, given the context. Can anybody give me any corrections/explanations of why the Spanish is written like this?

Thanks for the suggestion, gfreed, but I'm still not sure...I probably should have given more context. Later in the article there's a section on immigrant women who are in abusive relationships being allowed to stay in the country, which is why I translated it as I did.

Interesting question, welcome to the forum![]()
Let's seperate:
El texto garantiza a las mujeres irregulares que no serán expulsadas a la espera de sentencia judicial o de informe fiscal'
Las mujeres denuncian.
Which becomes: .....las mujeres irregulares (que denuncian) que no.....
women who report that they won't be..
This translation is actually correct:
The text guarantees irregular immigrant women who report (any violation) that they will not be deported.
It may be referring to the first definition given in our dictionary.
....women who report to the authorities or turn themselves in are guaranteed that they won't be deported....
