When is a tilde used in Cuando.

Question

The following sentences employ the word “cuando.” The first sentence spells cuándo with a tilde, while second sentence doesn’t. With my limited knowledge of spanish, I cannot see what would cause the difference in spelling.

yo no sé cuándo será mi fin.

Es una contradicción que mis patatas tengan que salir a... a Alemania a ser vendidas, por ejemplo, cuando el mercado español está consumiendo patatas.

I would appreciate any clarification.

It uses a tilde when it is a question or when it has the sense of a question, like in your example. .
