"IF" story using the 2nd conditional

"IF" story using the 2nd conditional

This is for everyone, and everybody is invited to participate, maybe the more advanced people can come up with funny ideas, as Heidi suggested in her 1st conditional thread.

The structure of a second conditional sentence

Paralee’s Learn Spanish 3.11 - Hopes and Dreams with the Imperfect Subjunctive.

The second conditional is a structure used for talking about unreal situations in the present or in the future.

Like a 1st conditional, a 2nd conditional sentence consists of two clauses, an "if" clause and a main clause:

So the idea is this:
if clause + main clause

• If I had a million dollars, I would buy a big house.

• If I had a million dollars, I could buy a big house

• Si tuviera un millón de dólares, compraría una casa grande.

• Si tuviera un millón de dólares, podría comprar una casa grande

• If I bought a big house, I would have lots of parties.

• Si comprara una casa grande, tendría muchas fiestas.

As the idea is to follow up from the last post, it is essential to click on "newest"!!

We will start in Spanish and English:

Update

Note - you put the imperfect subjunctive in the "If" clause - and the conditional in the "main" clause.

• If I were married, I would have a wife
• Si estuviera casado, tendría una esposa.

Si mi marido me dejara, no tendría que comprar lápices de labios.

If my husband left me, I wouldn't have to buy lipsticks.

Of course you would - all bunnies wear lipstick. :) - ian-hill, Apr 3, 2011
Me thinks lipstick is just lipstick and not lipstick with an "S" like sheepses :) - dewclaw, Apr 8, 2011
If one buys more than one - it "could" be plural. "I bought several lipsticks" - ian-hill, Apr 9, 2011
Lipstick is one of those nouns that can be both countable and non-countable. - ian-hill, Apr 9, 2011

Si le escribiera una carta a mi amiga que no he visto hace muchos años, podría decirle que sigo estudiando español.

If I were to write a letter to my friend who I haven't seen for many years, I could tell her that I'm still studying Spanish.

Edited as my original sentence was odd in either language.

Is there a typo? Should it be "couldn't be sure.."? - rabbitwho, Apr 7, 2011
I know what you mean, but no I did mean it in the way that writing to her would be a way of finding out whether or not she still lived at the same address. It's rather awkward, think I'll change it! - galsally, Apr 7, 2011
Ah ha! you had meant "I would find out whether she still lived..." - rabbitwho, Apr 7, 2011
