Q&A

Children like to play with remote controlled cars.

The suggestion is to use "A los niños les gusta...."

and I'm wondering if that is because the verb gustar is used?

That is correct, bandit, the chidren is not the subject here, but the object and takes a personal "a".

Heidi, are you sure about "a" being personal?

jugar... = subject

a = preposition (not personal "a")

The "a" introcudes the indirect object, and it is compulsory, even for objects. - lazarus1907, Apr 3, 2011
I know that, and I know for a fact that it is the right construction. My contention is that that a in the beginning is a preposition, not the personal "a" - Deanski, Apr 3, 2011
