Le iba a Hillary

Le iba a Hillary

Hi all,

I'm listening to a podcast from last year. At one point the host says: "El gobernador le iba a Hillary." She is talking about the governor of a state that Hillary Clinton won. Does this mean Hillary suited the govenor's purposes? Or that the govenor endorsed her? I understand that there was some sort of support given to Hillary here, but I'm confused about the meaning of "le iba" here.

Thanks for your help.

That means that he endorsed her. Depending on the context, that colloquialism could be also translated as "he rooted for Hilary/he was rooting for Hilary". "Yo voy a ti" means tends to be used for "I root for you".
