The dictionary is confusing on this as examples under both forms seem to fit. I want to say "You deserve this great honor." Is is "Mereces este gran honor." or "Te mereces este gran honor

Te mereces is just more emphatic. More generally, merecerse should not be used with inanimate objects or nonphysical things like ideas.

No, in this case the one deserving something is a person, so either form could be used. If you were saying the theory of warp drive engines deserves more consideration, merecerse should not be used. - lorenzo9, Apr 1, 2011
