I totally disagree. I've done Pimsleur III and Plus (didn't do I or II because I knew I was beyond them at the point that I discovered that my library had Pimsleur) and am now working my way through FSI (I'm up to Unit 26 in level 2 now.) I find FSI much more stimulating and challenging. The speakers speak at a true native rate (fast....they slow way down on Pimsleur), the grammar is much more complete and intensive, as is the vocabulary. Pimsleur was so easy it bored me stiff.

I do think that Pimsleur is better for beginners, but when you complete all of its levels you'll barely be at the intermediate level, despite what they claim. Pimsleur first (or, better yet, Learning Spanish Like Crazy) followed by FSI seems like it would be a good plan for someone starting out.

I think that many who are bored by FSI may not be ready for it. Of course it was developed to be used by FS workers with or without any previous exposure to the language, but that was with a teacher.

EDIT: It's the FSI Spanish Basic Course that I'm using (and don't be fooled by the name....it was designed to take one to advanced fluency.)

I did about half I will tell it is REALLY boring. I easily recommend Pimsleur over it, which you can rent for free from the library.

Gracias.

Edit: I had to quit it was so boring and I am quite diligent in my learning if that means anything to you.

Jeezle I have used Pimsleur they are good but my local library only has up to level 2 in Spanish and level 1 b in Portuguese and the cost of buying them all is prohibitively expensive - FELIZ77, Mar 29, 2011

http://insta-fsi.s3.amazonaws.com/fsi_web.html ....This is FSI in a flashcard/grammar structure... It's really good!! Definitely worth checking out :D ... I'm doing Pimsleur 1-3 (Library Stuff) Then Learning Spanish Like Crazy 1+2 ... And This modern version of FSI ... And of course I have Spanish Friends and SpanishDict to help me on my Spanish journey... I'm about 2 months into it and LOVE IT!!
