Screeching.

I wish to say, 'with Romany violins and metal on metal screeching to crescendo's at certain points', but I don't know if I could use 'Chillido' for 'screeching'.
Any ideas?

Have you thought of the verb "chirriar"?
Dicho de los pájaros que no cantan con armonía: chillar (? dar chillidos).

I like gritar. Crescendos, without an apostrophe, is the plural.
