I think the only thing that will help with the accent is practice. Listen to how native speakers sound and then try to mimic how they say the words. It's interesting that in infants and young children, there is an inborn ability to perfectly mimic and to pick up languages easily. This is why our mother tongue seems so much easier than a language we try to learn later in life as this ability diminishes over time. However, it is possible to have a decent accent even if you are older. It takes a lot of listening and practicing.
I think if you get a learning series like "Learning Spanish Like Crazy" or maybe Pimsleur, and if you do your best to say it like they say it, you will begin to acquire somewhat of a Spanish accent.
I mostly study with Learning Spanish Like Crazy. People say my Spanish sounds South American. I guess that came from the recordings, which are purported to be based on accents from Medellin, Colombia.
Okay, here's another conscious thing you can do.
In English many of our vowels are diphthongs, that is, double sounds - Like the word "say" is really s - short e-- plus -- long ee, sayee.
Our "No" sounds like there's a W at the end. Our See sounds like there's a Y at the end.
For Spanish, the vowels all only have one sound. Just do the first one.
Short e/cut it off: Yo sé.
Or like with no: It's not no-oo--w, it's just no/. There's no W sound at the end, see?
If you can do this, you will sound really excellent.
If you hear a song and watch a movie, try to record your voice imitating as close as you can the pronunciation. If you can record the native Spanish first and your pronunciation right after, can be even better. You can try over and over until your pronunciation is as close as you can pronunce.
Hope it can help you.. It's actually helping me a lot.
Abrazos...
This may sound odd, but it helps to have a good relationship with your own mouth!
You have to change the way your tongue and teeth feel when you talk. You will hold your chin differently. The best tip I ever had in imitating speech was that Virginians speak with their teeth almost clenched. When you can change your jaw, you will sound different.
Another tip that has turned out to be true: in Spanish, consonants are spoken with less emphasis than a North-american English speaker likes to do. Soften the consonants, let the vowels carry the word.
Most of the rest of the world doesn't keep their mouth as lax as an American English Speaker (where are you from?), so hold those cheeks still and mumble a bit... Imagine yourself speaking with a cigarette in your mouth... maybe try this... a candy cigarette, natch...
(My verbs aren't in order but my accent is good, so watch out -- the better you get, the faster people speak to you!)
If you're using a video course, listen to their pronunciation and imitate it closely also I find something that's very helpful is showing my spanish-speaking friends what I"m learning in spanish and then having them begin simple conversations in spanish and they can teach you soooo much in those conversation times. You learn more than just the video, book, etc is teaching you and you gain so much more from being "immersed" in Spanish!
Hope this helps!
This may sound strange, but I believe it is true: If you can speak English with a Spanish accent you can speak Spanish with a Spanish accent. As previous answers have suggested listen, imitate and practice. Most people don't enjoy studying phonetics and trying to figure out mouth and tongue configurations so those three steps are the key and remember: eef ju ken espick eenglis wis ah espahnis ahxen ju ken espick espahnis wis ah espahnis ahxen.
