Qué es vs Cuál es

Qué es vs Cuál es

Hi Everyone! I've just started learning about qué vs cuál and I already have some questions. According to every website I've encountered (including this one) you use qué es for definitions and cuál es for everything else. Yet my spanish textbook says that qué es is also used for nationalities and occupations:

  • ¿Qué es Ud., chileno o español?
  • ¿Qué es Luisa, instructora de tenis o entrenadora de fútbol?

Is this right? I guess you can kind of consider these definitions, if the nationality/occupation defines you, but I think its a stretch.

Also, why is Qué used in the following sentence? I don't see why cuál would be used instead but I don't know why qué is used in the first place:

  • ¿Qué está al este de Venezuela?

Thanks!!!

Qué is used like what and cuál is used like which, more or less. One of the things ser is used for is definitions and your last question uses estar because it is asking about a location.
