imperfect vs past tense

I hate the imperfect and past tense because in a sentence I don't know which one to use! Please help!
For Ex.
El rey primero (ser) “Jaguar Pájaro”

This is a problem for a lot of people. In the reference section there is helpful info about it. Under the more tab at the top of the screen choose reference. Then click on Spanish Verbs. You'll find it there. Also if you search the questions, there are explanations and links to other references.
