Libya - what goes around comes around.
In view of what is happening in Libya right now I wanted to relate this true story.

A good Bolivian friend of mine attended a university here in Bolivia in the 1950s.
In the early 1960’s he learned English in order to apply for a place at a university in the United States of America.
He was accepted and his travel and other expenses were paid by the American government (a scholarship) and travelled by train and ship to Florida and from there by train to New York.
He graduated as a civil engineer and worked for the United Nations.
He met and married a Scottish lady from near Lockerbie.
They had 3 children.
All three graduated from Yale University; a statistically amazing achievement.
Just before Christmas 1989 one of his sons was on the Pan Am plane that was blown up and crashed in Lockerbie. This act of terrorism was authorised by the President of Libya.
Very soon after that his wife died. My friend said from a broken heart.
A younger son, who has a British passport, was so badly affected by this experience that he has never worked and became very confused about his own identity.
He has suffered many health problems.
Sometime in about 2005 the family was compensated with $10,000.000 by the Libyan government.
This money brought with it many new problems.
My friend feels bad every time he spends a dollar – his younger son enjoys nothing that he buys with the money.
Every thing in their house reminds them of their dead son and brother and of their wife and mother.
What started as an adventure of a lifetime is ending in a life of sadness.
What a shame!
Un amigo mío bueno asistió una universidad aquí en Bolivia en los años cincuenta.
En los 1960 tempranos él aprendió inglés para solicitar un lugar en una universidad en Estados Unidos de América.
Fue aceptado y su viaje y otros gastos fueron pagados por el gobierno de Estados Unidos (una beca) y viajó en tren y en barco a Florida y desde allí en tren a Nueva York.
Se graduó como ingeniero civil y trabajó para las Naciones Unidas.
Conoció a una mujer escocesa que venía de cerca a Lockerbie y se casaron.
Tuvieron 3 hijos.
Los tres se graduaron de la Universidad de Yale, un logro increíble estadísticamente.
Justo antes de Navidad de 1989 uno de sus hijos estaba de pasajero en el avión de Pan Am cuando se explotó y se estrelló sobre Lockerbie.
Este acto de terrorismo fue autorizado por el presidente de Libia.
Muy poco después del terrorismo murió su esposa.
Mi amigo me lo contó con un corazón roto.
El hijo más joven, que tiene pasaporte británico, estaba tan afectado por esta experiencia que nunca ha trabajado y se ha quedado muy confundido acerca de su propia identidad, pues ha sufrido muchos problemas de salud.
De repente en un momento por el año 2005, el gobierno de Libia compensó a la familia unos $10,000.000.
Este dinero trajo consigo muchos problemas nuevos.
Mi amigo se siente mal cada vez que pasa un dólar a alguien - su hijo más joven no disfruta de nada de lo que se compra con el dinero.
Cada cosa en su casa les recuerda de un hijo muerto y un hermano y de un esposa y una madre.
Lo que comenzó como una aventura de toda una vida se termina en una vida de tristeza.
¡Qué lástima tan incomprensible!

Ian your story makes me really sad. How tragic for your friend and all of his losses... I hope somehow he can find a bit of peace and happiness at some point through all of this. I don't know what else to say.

Ian it seems generally very well written. and I am not a native like Cogumela Lazarus or Heidita but I did notice a few mistakes that needed correction.

I think that the word tiempo is missing here but I could be wrong.
3 incompresible! Should be spelt: incomprensible probably a typo but letter n is missing here
