2nd conjugation (ER) and 3rd conjugation (IR) verbs both form the regular verb gerundio by removing the ER or IR from the infinitive and replacing it with iendo.

comer=comiendo

vivir=viviendo

el gerundio

ER & IR verbs-

Drop ER/IR and add IENDO:

comer> comiendo, escribir>escribiendo, etc.

However, there are many irregular verbs and stem changing verb rules for forming the gerundio.

The present progressive tense is formed by using the present tense of Estar + the gerundio. Other verbs of motion like seguir, continuar, andar, salir, venir are used with the gerundio to form adverbial phrases.
