¿Habla ingles? / Habla ingles.

¿Habla ingles? / Habla ingles.

When "¿Habla ingles? " is used with a question mark, it means Do you speak english. And then the same thing "Habla ingles." means He/she/usted speaks english. Is this correct? Do we just change the tone in our voice in order to ask a question vs a statement? This is slightly confusing to me. Thanks

Welcome to the forum PT, and welcome to the confusing world of español. - Yeser007, Mar 19, 2011
Haha, I find English much more challenging and confusing to learn. - Vince_Peña, Mar 19, 2011

Hi ^_^

This is just like questions in English sometimes you say:

She plays football?

And

She plays football.

The only difference between those two examples is the way you pronounce each one of them wink

Here we are playing with the two forms of "you" that the Spanish language has; formal / polite and familiar. "¿Habla ingles? " you are asking in the formal manner "Do you speak English?" Or "Does she / he speak English?"

"Habla ingles" Has 2 meanings.... (without the question marks) "She / he speaks English" or "Speak English" as a command in the familiar way The intonation of the voice is the same as in English

I don't agree ¿Habla Ingles? ( with the question marks) means "Do you speak English?", but Habla Ingles (without the question marks) means "Speak english"

Yeah, it could also be the command to tell someone to speak English. - Vince_Peña, Mar 19, 2011
