Japanese Ability

We have all heard about the terrible destruction at the moment going on in Japan. I know everyone here hopes and prays that this great country will soon be resurrected to its former glory. The ability of the Japanese is exemplified by this You Tube clip below which goes to show what can be achieved by working in unison.

I am amazed by the fifty nameless people who have remained at th Fukushima nuclear plant. Soldiers, policemen, firemen, etc. are usually named as heroes. We can now add scientists an other workers to that list.

I am very impressed by the Japanese sense of community during this disaster. If it were any other country, you would be reading not just about the destruction and devistation but the looting as well. Japan is truly a civilized society.

Hi Roger

Being the member who posted this thread I take issue with your above remark. My wife's uncle was a prisoner of the Japanese in one of their war camps. Some of the stories he told us were truly horrific so I do know someone who suffered at the hands of the Japanese. You cannot be that naive to think that atrocities were not carried out by the allied forces. Unfortunately these things happen when countries are at war. Can we continue to blame the present day population of Japan for deeds carried out by their ancestors, I think not.

Yes RogerHH , I have known, and do know many people men and women who were

brutalised by the Japanese, one of whom was a six month old baby when placed in a

camp , he spent six years there ,and when released he spent a further 3 years as a

prisoner of the Indonesians. I also know ex nurses who were treated appallingly by

them, A few weeks ago the Japanese Gov, invited Australian survivors of their

camps for an official apology, those who could go did so ,and afterwards declared

that they felt no ill will but wished it had come earlier. All of these survivors

shared one thing in common and that is their ability to forgive and to forget

It is a great irony now that the Japanese now need the help from us all in order to

survive , it is up to all of us to give that help without thinking of the past , but

to forget and to give . Generosity is one of our greatest gifts , we receive far

more from giving than we realise ,so open your hearts and forget the past , the

only time that matters is the present moment.

Don't get me wrong, what has happened and may still happen is tragic and I feel true sympathy for the people, but the phrases 'great country' and 'truly civilized" are written by people who don't know anyone who worked on the Burmese railway or was in a WW11 Japanese prisoner of war camp. This may seem harsh, but read about people who had those experiences.

But yes, what they have experienced now is awful and will take years to clean up and lives and families will be changed forever and that is just the tsunami.
