"Great drops beat on the roof of the car." ( I found this in a book)._

"Great drops beat on the car's roof."

The first is more formal than the second? or vice versa? When I have to use a way or other?

Desde ya, gracias.

Para mí, prefiero la primera frase, pero estoy de acuerdo con los otros foreros. :) - galsally, Jun 20, 2011

Poetic is in the ear of the listener. For me, the second varient has a smoother flow, but in the end it's a matter of personal taste. And as previously stated, both sentences have identical meaning and I don't see that one is more formal than the other.

The first one sounds a bit more poetic. They both convey exactly the same thing. There is no difference in meaning.
