"throwing money AT things"

the majority of which were totally useless and a complete waste.

That should be "instead" instead of "invest".

The use of prepositions in English is arbitrary and depends on the preceding verb.

You spend money on things.
You invest money in stocks and bonds.
You put money in a bank.
