Kids Books and Easy Reading

Question

Hi, I was wondering if anyone knew of any kid's books (or relatively simple books) in Español that are food for a beginner?

I was also about a good place to buy books like this... does amazon.com work well for or are there better sites? Is there a Spanish amazon.com?

I get books from DK Readers... They come in a variety of levels geared to where you are in your learning process. Here is a link to there site... But I get mine from Amazon and Ebay... DK Libros Para Niños

Most of the large bookstore chains have sections for "libros en español". You can browse the adult or children's section to find books of interest and read a bit to determine if the book is at a level appropriate to your level. They have everything from very simple books for toddlers up to the Harry Potter books. Right now, I am enjoying "las chrónicas de Narnia".

I read a book when I was a child called El Camino Real. I do not know the answer to where you can best find it. I have heard Amazon works well, however.

Reading fun or interesting books that are bilingual or available separately in both Spanish and English has been a fun and learning-full experience for me. You can search for bilingual kid's books internally at the Amazon site. There is also a free download of a bilingual book geared to about 5th grade level called "The Bicycle Thief." It's not baby Spanish/English, and the bilingual feature is cool because you see the texts side by side, with the corresponding words highlighted within each text so that you can just read along in Spanish or English but easily find the translation of an unfamiliar word by checking the other text. Just google: "fusion reader free download." For more advanced reading, I loved Isabel Allende's trilogy aimed at young adults which begins with La Ciudad de las Bestias. It was easy to find it in both Spanish and English, which is a very fun way to read a book that is interesting but at a very challenging level linguistically. (I read in Spanish but consulted the English translation fairly frequently.) Although I live in a very homogeneous small rural white community, the local library orders Spanish-language books for me free through inter-library loan. (I request specific titles and they get them!) Most libraries have this service. One more thing: our library also offers free online access to kids' electronic books through a program called "Tumblebooks." These books (available in both English and Spanish) are cool because you can see the pages AND hear a native speaker reading the book aloud online! I access them from home, but through the library's website. Good luck and happy reading!
