National Spanish Exam Grammar

Question

Hi everyone! Well I have the big National Spanish Exam tomorrow and I have some questions about some of the grammar it says we need to know.

One of the standards is: "gender and number of nouns ending in -dad, -ción, -ma and -pa" What does this mean? I can't find any specific article addressing these; is there something special about the gender and number? Also when do you omit articles in Spanish?

Nouns ending in "-dad" / "-tad" / "-tud" are always feminine:-

• la ciudad, la edad, la universidad
• la amistad, la facultad, la libertad
• la inquietud, la juventud, la virtud

Nouns ending in "-ción" / "-sión" / "-gión" also feminine:-

• la canción, la estación, la lección
• la profesión, la televisión, la tensión
• la legión, la región, la religión

Nouns of Greek origin, ending in "-ma" / "-ta" / "-pa" are masculine:-

• el clima, el programa, el tema
• el cometa, el planeta (but to confuse you: la dieta )
• el mapa

The key word is, Greek. Nouns of GREEK origin ending in .... Don't be confused by this, as not all nouns ending "-ma," for example, are masculine. Ex.: la fama, la cama, etc. - hhmdirocco, Mar 15, 2011

You might also want to note that nouns ending in -ión lose the accent in the plural, i.e. "canción" → "canciones" etc. - Izanoni1, Mar 15, 2011

I'm not familiar with it, so what is the National Spanish Exam? What purposes is the test used?
