How would you translate sight-read into Spanish?

I wanted to write to a musician friend about a sight-reading band, and none of my Spanish-speaking friends have a clue what this means. When an orchestra or other group plays music the members have never seen before, it is called sight-reading. I had to do it frequently in the orchestra I was in when guest artists came from out of town.

In general, "To read music" is simply "Leer música."

"Leer partituras" is a more technical term for reading music written for any instrument and "Leer tableturas" is for reading music written specifically for string instruments only.

Here in Mexico, I have heard the phrase "echarse un palomazo" or "tocar un palomazo". Maybe it has the meaning you are looking for.

Another option would be the verb repentizar which was listed in both the Spanish and English sections of my Oxford Spanish Dictionary and means to sight read (mus)

It can also mean to improvise
