The fruit - Which is english is translated in spanish as la fruta - it ends in "A" so is feminine. However this rule doesn't work for every word, so you will have to learn some off by heart. After time you get a feel or it and can tell yourself what the gender is.

I think it goes a little beyond what Sabor found on the dictionary, actually.

Fruit can be masculine or feminine, and some of the context is as stated by Sabor. But "fruto" (masculine) can also mean results (fruit of his labor - el fruto de su trabajo), the yielding of a crop (los frutos del campo), seafood (frutos de mar), and offspring in general (los frutos del peral, los frutos del naranjo, el fruto de su vientre).

Gekko, Your answer is better than mine for frutos, but RAE has fruta seca and basically agrees with the SpanishDict dictionary about the feminine form meaning fruit that is edible. - Sabor, Mar 13, 2011
Right. My point is that in terms of real use, both words are widely used, and Fruto is not restricted to the definitions given therein. - Gekkosan, Mar 13, 2011

The dictionary will tell you. M is used for masculine, f for feminine.

Fruit [fru?t] sustantivo 1. fruta (f) (for eating); fruto (m) (on plant)

You can see that if fruit is on the table, it is (f) feminine. If still on the tree it is (m) masculine.
