Sailing with Swords

I need to know what article (un/una) to use before the following types of fish:

a swordfish: ____ pez espada a sailfish: ____ pez vela

Generally speaking masculine words are usually proceeded by the masculine article el and feminine words by the feminine article la. When you use a real dictionary it should always mention whether the noun is masculine or feminine. I would encourage you to use one

There are a numerous exceptions in Spanish so you need to be aware of the possibility that the word you want to use may not follow the rule,

such as el día, el pez, el problema,

According to my dictionary they would both be masculine, so use "el"
