'I tried to (do something)' .... Traté de hacer algo (from the verb Tratar) To make the effort to do something that may or may not be do-able.

"Probar" is to try something new such as tasting new food, drink, trying out a new car, etc.

"Probado" is the participle form. What you are saying is "I tried it" ...

Perfectly clear Agora! I too would use "tratar" here. - pacofinkler, Mar 10, 2011

I disagree that "probar" only means to taste. On my side of the world, "probar" is also used to mean "to try".

"Probé a hacer el examen pero no logré pasar" - "I tried to do the test but I didn't pass"

I tried the technique you showed me, and it was a complete success".
