Someone is going to give you preterito and imprectfect indicative answer - which is the technical complicated answer. There are both past tenses of estar and the way it seems to go is people use estaba a lot more than estuvo and even when you think it would be estuvo it isn't.

The best I have worked out is the generaly go with estaba but if you are talking about something not being "there" estuvo is probably the answer.

As you can see, I have no idea either and look forward to the answer, but when in doubt opt for estaba --- and red when playing roulette.

The same as the difference between imperfecto and indefinido. You might be asked later to check out the reference section for the explanation & examples. But honestly, this is one of my pitfalls as well, especially when estar is used in progressive constructions.
