Fue el presidente entre 2000 y 2006.

Is that right, or is there a better way to say it?

I think that is fine. I would translate this as "He was president between 2000 and 2006. Personally I would say desde 2000 hasta 2006.

Thanks; I was wondering how to phrase it that way but I wasn't sure. - someone09, Mar 8, 2011
No problem. Glad I could help. - pescador1, Mar 8, 2011

Perfect. Even though 6 years is a long time, you have clearly indicated a beginning and ending to the action so pretérito is used.

Hola, someone,

A variation you might consider is:

Fue el presidente desde 2000 hasta 2006.

He was president from 2000 until 2006.
