Is there a way to write the past in the present?

I am helping someone with their Spanish. They want to say something like, "She was 17 when I was born." Because they only know the present indicative, is there a way to reword the English sentence so we can figure out the Spanish translation using present tense?

Are you familar with the historical present tense?
This method of writing is often used in beginning Spanish language text books when only the present tense of the verb is known.

She is 17 years older than me. Or she could learn some more grammar.
