"como te has sido" = how have you been?

¿Cómo has estado? is how have you been.

Similar to that which you have written is ¿Cómo te ha ido?. I don't know if you came up with the above yourself or are asking about something you have heard. If you have heard something similar to your post then it would more likely be my second offering, which means something like how has it gone for you, basically, how's it going.

Interestingly, and I was going to ask a question about this, at least in Locombia, it is normal to say ¿Cómo has estado? to someone you don't know. In English you might say how are you or how is it going to someone you either don't know or don't know well. This question can, and often it, token, and does not need to be answered literally. How have you been is never a token question in English, it is a genuine question that begs a proper answer and would not be asked of someone who you didn't care about. At least in my English.

Any comments re. the use of ¿cómo has estado? from around the world?

I think it depends as to whether he did the translation or heard something and want's to know what it meant. I'd go for the former though were I to have to guess and agree with you. At least Des has a veritable plethora of options now for greeting people - afowen, Mar 8, 2011
