The sentence/clause that is contradicted must be negative as in Heidita's example. - 0074b507, Mar 5, 2011

Don't know if it's right?

Related question:

How do you say but as in

"He wore nothing but flipflops" Llevaba nada (but) chancletas.

"but" works MUCH too hard in English, it should take a break and let some other words help so we'd be less confused.

No sólo me gustan las mujeres hermosas, sino además las mujeres inteligentes.

Not only do I like beautiful women, but also intelligent women.

That doesn't look correct to me. What follows sino is supposed to negate what preceded it. Not that, but rather this. Put "but rather" in your sentence an see that it does not work. - 0074b507, Mar 5, 2011
contradict or exclude I should have said. In your case intelligent women does not exclude beautiful women. - 0074b507, Mar 5, 2011
Citation: Sino follows a negation and means something like "but on the contrary" or "but instead": - 0074b507, Mar 5, 2011
Look at sy2op's answer and see how "except what you see" contradicts "Do not believe anything." - 0074b507, Mar 5, 2011
In this use it means "not only...but also" you can also use también in place of adémas. Normally it means but in the sense of rather. - pescador1, Mar 5, 2011
I know the general rules. This is a special construction. - pescador1, Mar 5, 2011
Thank you for the explanation. - 0074b507, Mar 5, 2011
