"Te toca a ti" vs "te toca

Question

Why does the former always seem to be used? Can one use the latter phrase? What exactly does "a ti" (to you) or "a mi" mean in this context of "it's your (my) turn"?

Te toca a ti is used very frequently in a game of poker or dominoes. When you say "Te toca a ti" (usually pointing at the person who needs to play next) is to be specific. If you just say Te toca you may not get the attention of the right person.

PS - Both expressions mean the same, though.

Well, we usually say "a ti" when we are in big groups and we are addressing directly to one person, if you are only two or three, you can say the first, anyway they can be used interchangeably.

Since it is not used to remove any ambiguity, it could be for emphasis. It is your turn. Most likely, however, it is just how it is phrased. Just as in English certain phrases become commonplace and then everyone adopts them as the way of expressing that context.
