Our dictionary lists 5 things here;

1. assembly (de máquina)
2. staging (Teatro)
3. montage (photography)
4. editing (Cine)
5. put-up job (farsa)

I think

when I hear montaje, and usually "put of job, farce" etc..

All of the listed meanings are correct.

I am pretty confident that by now you know how to check the RAE:

montaje.

1. m. Acción y efecto de montar (? armar las piezas de un aparato o máquina).
2. m. Combinación de las diversas partes de un todo.
3. m. Cureña o armazón a la que se ajustan las piezas de artillería.
4. m. En el cine, ordenación del material ya filmado para constituir la versión definitiva de una película.
5. m. En el teatro, ajuste y coordinación de todos los elementos de la representación, sometiéndolos al plan artístico del director del espectáculo.
6. m. Aquello que solo aparentemente corresponde a la verdad.
7. m. Ajuste y acoplamiento de las diversas partes de una joya.
8. m. Acús. Grabación compuesta conseguida por la combinación de dos o más grabaciones. ~ fotográfico.
9. m. Fotografía conseguida con trozos de otras fotografías y diversos elementos con fines decorativos, publicitarios, informativos, etc.

Why should I check it when we have our excellent dictionary here, which lists five entries while the RAE compunds the issue with it's 4 extra entries. But my real question was: aren't those two the most used? Farce, and montage? Gracias. - jeezzle, Mar 3, 2011

Because our dictionry, while handy, tends to be inaccurate. The RAE,while missing neologisms and slang, is accurate. And no, faarce and montage are not the most commong meanings. In my opinion, staging and assembly are more common. - Gekkosan, Mar 3, 2011

Todo es un montaje refers to something that is staged and unreal. Other expressions include:

Todo es una patraña.

Es pura ficción.
