Since both mean to begin, is there any context in which the use of one is preferred over the other?

They mean the same thing, but people around here say empezar more often. However, the last one I heard used was comenzar.

Great question.
Both "Commence" and "Start" mean 'begin' in English. Do we choose one based on the action, or what we would like the listener to believe regarding our verbal skills? Since I can't answer this "English" question, I wonder if your original question can be answered much better...
