What should I call my dogs when discribing them?

I have a male and female dog. I know él perro is ok for him, but the female is la perra. I know this is a cuss word, and I don't want to offend anyone. Does anyone know what I can use instead?

Perra is not a cuss word when referring to an animal. It's when you use it with a person that it becomes a problem.
