Usage of "a ver".

Question

Hello, I am curious as to the proper usage for the term "a ver". I hear a lot of Spanish in the workplace and try to learn from this setting, but I am having a little bit of trouble with this.

I can tell it's essentially "to see", and I'm guessing it can be used when you want someone to look at something...however I don't understand when this would be appropriate as opposed to "mira", or something else perhaps?

Any help would be appreciated, thank you.

is "let's see" very common usage, "vamos a ver" lets go see.

hmmmmm......let's see.....= hmmmmm......a ver.....

Thanks! Though I'm not quite getting the usage...some sort of example perhaps?

1) any sentence where you would say "let's see" in English.

2) at a gated entrance to get a guard's attention

3) to get someone to open the popsicle case if you're a kid

a ver is closer to "let's see".
