One might equally ask "Why does English use (some form of) "to be" for so many different meanings?" .e.g. "I am a man.", "I am in New York.", "I am tired.", "I am cold/hungry." By all means, follow the links that Quentin provided, we have bushels (if not tons) of discussions about the differences between ser/estar.

The link qfreed gave you is a good start! Also typing "soy" into the dictionary will give you more information as well as typing "estoy" into the dictionary. The Conjugation link is pretty impressive, too. (That one is under the More link) Hope these suggestions help.
