And who will stand.

And who will stand.

I have been searching for the poem from which this quotation comes,

"And who will stand at either hand and keep the bridge with me"

With the profound knowledge of the members here, I am certain one of you may know the poem.( I think it is Roman)

Horatius at the Bridge by Thomas B. Macaulay

I found this at "wikisource" (but was, in fact, familiar with the poem from a long, long time ago)

Ha! Ha! When we were children, our mother used to pay my brother and me 5 cents (with inflation it would be at least 25 cents now; more likely $1.00) per line for learning poetry (however, one had to learn the entire poem; not just snippets). Despite the comment in the link that Gocika provided, my brother memorized the entire thing. Simply by virtue of hearing him practice it so many times, I can recite the first 4-5 verses but that, of course, wasn't enough to qualify for the payment. I did, however, memorize several other long poems (and was duly compensated) while he (due to listening to me practice) learned much of them (but not enough to count).

skip down to the poem

Already immortal in literature, Horatius' fame was augmented in modern times by Thomas Babington Macaulay’s 1842 poem, Horatius, from his Lays of Ancient Rome:
