Options for "took place. . ."?
I wanted to say:
The story took place in a religious school.
An online translator said:
La historia llevó a cabo . . .
Is this a correct translation? Is there a better expression or other words to say "took place"? I could always use pasó, but I wanted to try something different . . .
Thank you for your thoughts.

tener lugar = to take place.
Also you can use ocurrir, pasar, & other verbs for "to happen." Llevar a cabo is something like "to finish, to put an end to, to accomplish."
How about 'La historia ocurrió en una escuela...'
I like the verb: suceder.
Acontecer (aconteció) might make a nice option for "it occurred" / "it happened"; although I'm not too sure it works with the sentence given.
