I read this phrase on the wall of an 'exposición de fotografía'...
"John Gutmann sea más conocido por..."
I think it translates simply as "John Gutmann is best known for". However, I'm confused as to why it takes the subjunctive. Isn't it just a standard statement of opinion?

No subjunctive is necessary, I think. I would say: "John Gutman, mejor conocido como..."
