"It was summer..." English to Spanish

¡Hola all!

I am new here and this is my first question.

I am writing an essay in Spanish. In the first sentance is: "Cuando tuve trece años, visité un pueblo pequeño en el sur de España que se llama Benitatxell." I then want to say "It was summer bla bla bla.."

I have 3 questions.

1) When I say it was, should I be using ser or estar. My gut tells me estar as the summer is a season, so tempoary.

2) Should I be using the imperfect or the preterit, and why?

3) [assming that the preterit is correct] Should I write "lo estuvo verano"? or just "estuvo verano"?

Cuando tenía 13 años

Era verano

Imperfect because you are narrating.

Era verano or Estábamos en verano. (It was Summer vs. We were in Summer)
