Él llega al aeropuerto Él se va del aeropuerto

Why is "se" used in the in the second, but not the first?

El se va del aeropuerto means He is leaving the airport. Irse - reflexive form of ir means to leave. If you use the dictionary tab for "ir" and scroll way down you'll find it.

It is a pronoun ( me, te, se and lo ). It is used in a reflexive way as a direct or indirect complement when the reference is the same as the subject. The subject do and receive the action. In the first part El llega al aeropuerto, who arrives to the airport : he. There`s no doubt. in the second part va del aeropuerto its not clear who goes, you need to use the se as a complement. El se va del aeropuerto.

Hope this helps..
