They are synonyms, but I think that bailar is much more used than danzar, at least in México; danzar is rather uncommon.

yes, I live in Miami and from all that fusion of spanish here heard only bailar...Danzar was new for me as I found it in the spanish translation of one german song, I guess it was spanish from Spain then.., - PearCloud, Feb 23, 2011

Honestly I never even thought about 'danzar' as a verb but you are certainly right, it is.
