Putting Preterites in the Past

Putting Preterites in the Past

I have changed the following sentence to put the preterites (in bold) in the past; however, translation wants to say tomó rather than tomé. Which is correct?

I translated the preterites in bold to be in the past:

Is this correct? Because they are all in the 'yo' form, right? Also, a little box pops up that says "tomé" may not be accurate in this context. Advice please. Thanks.
