"Ellas" utilizado como "estas"

I was reading the Nueva Versión Internacional Bible, and I came across this in 1 Corinthians:
"Ahora, pues, permanecen estas tres virtudes: la fe, la esperanza y el amor. Pero la más excelente de ellas es el amor."
Can somebody explain the use of "ellas", instead of "estas", to refer to the three virtues?

Quite common usage. Same in English as saying "of them" rather than "of these". - 0074b507, Feb 22, 2011
